TEST DRIVE MEME #1

WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD
Your journey only happened because of your benefactor, so it begets that it starts at your benefactor as well. SUPERBIA, which is as much of a location as it is an entity, is where everyone's search for Fortuna begins.

There's not much of a welcome party: shortly after their fateful encounter with SUPERBIA, in which they swore to join the quest to find Fortuna, the new Privateers will find themselves afflicted by a sudden change in perspective. See, teleportation is a tricky process, so from SUPERBIA's point of view, why not make the target destination none other than itself? One highly disconcerting moment later, and the Privateers find themselves inside the belly of the beast.

The vast mega-structure is shockingly lonely, void of anyone other than the Privateers. Those who look off the metal satellite and to The Network for intelligence (or take a skim at the Space Wikipedia article) will find out that the surrounding space is clear for lightyears; rumors have it that the place is cursed. It won't take long to understand why.

1
Overclocked

The innards of SUPERBIA are that of an impossibly scaled up computer, and the Privateers start right in the middle of it. You are the spider living in the dusty PS4. Literal rivers of coolant, transistors the size of mountains, landscapes made entirely of circuitry. The sky, bounded by a distant metal ceiling, is constantly alight with coursing electricity that cracks the sky with lightning storms. It can be assumed that the Privateers are the first living things to set foot here, because such a place is not ever meant to be traversed by delicate, organic, mortals that worry about things such as "temperature" or "voltage". SUPERBIA needs not lifeforms to continue its operations; why design for them? Traversal itself is difficult: unscalable walls and perilous drops are common to encounter. The only company the Privateers will find are oddly adorable maintenance robots, which sadly seem too occupied by their directives of maintaining the massive machine to offer any assistance (or even acknowledgement of their new guests).

It is immediately clear that the most urgent priority is to get the hell out of here. Before your adventure ends at the starting line.

2
Skeletons In The Closet

If one stays inside SUPERBIA, either by getting horribly lost or losing all common sense, one will notice a peculiar pattern emerge as one gets deeper into the bowels of the mega-structure. Passages shrink and become more level, and the incredible hostility and danger of the surroundings fade away, until one comes across areas which were definitely intended for humanoid organisms to use at one point.

The construction of these areas is cramped, unfurnished, and dreary; they are reminiscent of artificial environments meant to handle harsh external conditions like a submarine or bunker, but they are entirely livable. One can eventually find distinct rooms, but everything in them has crumbled to dust and their original purpose is nigh impossible to discern. Deeper investigation may reveal the few items that have stood the test of time. While it is more plausible for life to have existed here, that doesn't seem to be the case now. What happened here?

3
The Shipyard

In the opposite direction, when one finally reaches the outer edges of SUPERBIA, they will be rewarded with the place to pick up a spaceship and a stunningly beautiful view of outer space. The outside of SUPERBIA has no atmosphere to get between you and the stars, and they shine brightly, like a beacon calling one out into the first steps of adventure.

The shipyard is already filled with countless space ships of every size, form, and function, all autonomously constructed by SUPERBIA's factories over the countless years. What's the harm in taking one or twenty out for a spin? Even if one has no intentions of permanent ownership of the vehicle, it's not like SUPERBIA will miss it. For a Privateer with a more specific vision, however, there are kiosks around the yard which will allow one to design their very own space ship down to their exact specifications. When the process is done SUPERBIA's matter printers will have it out and space-ready right before your very eyes.

If a Privateer has a ship, vehicle, or large item that they intended to bring with them, they will also find them here, neatly parked in the Shipyard. Why didn't SUPERBIA extend this courtesy to the pilot's themselves? The answer is revealed as soon as the owner makes a closer inspection: the inner contents have been rearranged, like a whirlwind was unleashed inside and assorted loose items thrown around. Now aren't you glad your transportation was given special attention, and the same didn't happen to your innards?

4
Hot Crewmates in Your Area

But how will a single Privateer man an entire space ship? No worries: when one steps into a ship, the strangely endearing maintenance robots will suddenly take acute interest. The robots will follow inside and immediately start assuming the duties of a spacefarer, eliminating the need for extra hands on deck.

Even still, there's just no eliminating the want for a human touch, though. Thankfully even that dilemma has a contingency plotted by SUPERBIA.

Communication devices are easily available on every space ship. They come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from huge stationary consoles to portable smartphone-like screens. But whenever a Privateer attempts to access the Network, a pop-up will appear, obscuring the whole screen.

The device will be rendered unusable until one relents to the pop-up's demands and provides answers to its questions. What will these be used for? The mystery will be solved when a social media app mysteriously installs itself on the same device, with profiles preemptively made for every Privateer. Each Privateer's profile consists of their given answers, paired with embarrassingly candid photographs. SUPERBIA has eyes in many places it seems.

Chang Wufei ✦ Gundam Wing

[personal profile] zerofive 2022-10-08 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
i. overclocked
Wufei is not one to be particularly helpful to others. What he can do, however, is free-climb the seemingly-sheer metallic cliff-faces he is presented with, leap extraordinary distances, and at the very least not electrocute himself in the process.
erhaps you'll meet him as he's halfway up, climbing above you by clinging to fingerholds, or dropping a distance that seems entirely too far— if so, prepare to be ignored. If you can't help yourself, maybe you shouldn't have come here.

Or maybe, if you're lucky, and if you're skilled enough to get that far, you'll find him as you are climbing, and Wufei will begrudgingly consent to listen to your pleas... or maybe you'll just catch up to him while he's considering a jump, but before he makes it. In either case, talk fast. He's got places to be.

iii. shipyard
The shipyard, his eventual goal, finds Wufei moving between the ships with stoic purpose. He's not looking to commandeer a frigate, a shuttle, or a carrier— or anything else of the sort, at least not yet. What he's looking for is no less space-worthy, if more specialized, and... There!

"There you are," He says to himself; and so it is. The Gundam Altron stands at rest, every bit as tidily docked as if he had put her there himself, and Wufei approaches the looming vastness of his mobile suit with reverence and relief, "Nataku, I've found you."

Not that he would ever admit to anything as plebian as relief, mind you. But now that he's achieved his goal, he can focus on whatever comes next.

iv. crewmates
[It is only after many attempts that Wufei grudgingly answers the profferred questions. If he is to live and work here, to achieve this mission, one supposes it simply can't be helped.

Tell me a little about yourself.

Hermes v1 | Fortuna

Where Angels Fear To Tread

[One moment, Hermes was in his computer game. The next, talking to someone apparently from the real world. The next, he's in the actual real world. Hermes looks around in wonder... which quickly dissolves into an expression of mundanity. Huh. Hermes didn't realize that the real world could actually look as mundane as a location within his computer game. He quickly shakes off his disappointment and bounds up to the nearest person.]

SoAreYou ARealPerson!? I'veNeverMetA RealPersonBefore! I'm Hermes. Who are you?

Overclocked

[You, Hermes, and the small group you've formed have been progressing slowly but surely. When you come to a bridgeless chasm above a river of coolant, Hermes wastes no time bursting forth and easily jumping over it with ease. Little four-legged robot can be very speedy it seems. Another person attempts to humpo over, but doesn't quite make it, only managing to grup using their hands. They're struggling, and Hermes can easily help them up, but he seems to be only opting to watch the person struggle with an amused exression on his TV screen of a face.]

The Shipyard

[When you and your group, including Hermes, manages to make it to the outer edges, everyone stares in awe of the scenery and ships. Suddenly Hermes gasps and bolts towards a particular ship.]

Wow! It's my ship!

[Hermes blinks, the implications finally reaching him.]

Wait... does this mean I agreed to get myself pirated?

Crewmates

[Tell me a little about yourself.]

I'm Hermes v1! An AI taken from a computer game. It's called... FORTUNA! What a coincidence, right?

[Are you a LEADER or a FOLLOWER?]

I'm happy to follow the orders of others. I've never really lead anything before. I don't think I will.

[What is your best feature?]

My speed! And my ability to ship! And my skill at giving out tutorials! And how cool I am!

About Robots/AI

[personal profile] pioneer10 2022-10-08 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
HEllo! I'm very excited about this spaceship game! I thought it might be fun to try a character who is really not so much on the humanoid body situation, since the setting of this game seems about as well-suited to The Weird Stuff, and was wondering how such a being might be handled in the course of this TDM.

Ten here is basically just a satellite. She can't really move on her own, outside of some kind of zero-g maneuvering jet situation (depending on how pedantic we're going to be about the Pioneer missions, which for convenience sake isn't going to be very). That said, she would be a good crewmate and friend, and has excellent recon skills... so it's not like she's just a lump of insensate silicon.

Would it be reasonable to have her appear in the shipyard, bypassing the organic trek, or would she absolutely need someone(s) to lug her almost 600-pound physical body through that whole adventure first?

The Doctor | Doctor Who

[personal profile] funnylittleclown 2022-10-08 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
1 - Overclocked

Happy under the breath little snickers proceeded the Doctor's appearance around the coil of a transistor.

"Fascinating. That's like a giant circuit board. Oh and there is a cooling fan... shouldn't get to close to that."

Looking one way and then the other like a child let loose and unsupervised in a candy store the Doctor only came to a stop when he reached the edge of a river. This was not just any river of course but a stream filled with coolant.

"Mmm... there seems to be no way to get across that. Unless, yes see, there are some wires down that way. We might be able to use them like a bridge."

2 - Skeletons in the Closet

There was something resembling a bed which the Doctor couldn't resist flopping into, just to test it out. He wasn't lost... even if he was... the journey was more than half the fun!

"There must have been a crew on this ship at some point. Either that or guests. Those maintenance robots wouldn't need a bed like this."

An uncomfortable metal bed with no padding. Well, there must have been some sort of mattress at one point but it like the crew had long since disappeared.
"I wonder if they left anything behind. Spread out and look around?"

3 - The Shipyard

Here too was a myriad of interesting things that the Doctor simply couldn't resist looking into. He would pop into one ship and pop out the back hatchway of another. They were all very interesting and unique, many with designs he had never seen before.

He may have even invited himself into one of the ships brought by one of those on the quest. Who could tell which ships were open for viewing and which belonged to some one else without going inside and having a poke around?

Eventually he found what he had been really searching for. It was small, likely the smallest ship in the hanger on the outside, worn blue, and had a sign that proclaimed it as a Police Public Call Box even when it wasn't.

"Ah, there you are! I knew you had to be around here some where."

He took a moment to fiddle around in his pockets for the key.

4 - Hot Crewmates in your Area

[ The Doctor tried for his best most charming of smiles but in the end it came out a bit goofy and childish... This was fine. ]

Hello, I'm the Doctor.

Asking whether I'm a leader or a follower is a rather subjective thing, I think. I prefer to think of myself as an adventurer. My friends and I often traveled to other worlds and while they are not here with me now I'm looking forward to see what all we might discover out there.

My best feature is... well I suppose I had better just show you.

[1 - Start the Day off With a Scream]

[Tsuna wasn't sure what he was going to get into when he signed up for this but this, truly, wasn't it.

He starts things off a little too close to an edge and only just managed to catch his balance. Unfortunately in that process, he gets a good look at the drop and that's enough to have him screaming as he throws himself on to the ground. He doesn't necessarily have a fear of heights anymore, but he doesn't like surprises.

Eventually, he gets up the courage to look around and take in the sights, which does not improve his mood.]

Hieee, what were they thinking? What kind of place is this?

[3 - Space is Big]

[The shipyard is incredible.

Tsuna has never seen anything like it. The closest he can get is the mecha anime he's watched over the years, but that is nothing compared to this. All the ships and robots and there's a small part of him that really wants to see a giant robot?

Still, he's a little intimidated, and a little lost. Can he really just pick a ship? That seems like it might be kind of lonely.

How does he even choose?

For now, he just sticks by a kiosk, looking through the ships and the possibility of help.]

So, uh, where do I start?

[4 - Swipe Right?]

[The picture, is appropriately enough, not a flattering one of Tsuna. It looks like a combination of him freaking out after being surprised by a robot and also having tripped on some wires. The expression of someone aware they are about to hit the ground, surprise shifting to more surprise just before the moment of impact.]

Why'd they have to pick that one...

Uh, anyway, I'm Tsunayoshi Sawada, from Namimori, Japan.

I guess I'm a LEADER, but I'd rather just be friends with everyone. My friends seem to think I do a good job though.

Kind of half to, in the ma-- [redacted]

Don't really know what my best feature is. I guess I'm good at video games?

Harlock | Space Pirate Captain Harlock (78 anime)/Leiji-verse

2. Looks like a dead man's party
This was far from the only time he had been in long-abandoned places. Harlock moves carefully through the spaces, scanning it with his one good eye, the cramped spaces is somewhat familiar, as he moves through the dust, searching for anything that survived, anything that could give them more of an idea of what's going on.

"Either it's been hundreds of years since someone has been in here, or some kind of time dilation effect occurred." The man wondered out loud.

3. Who Moved My Ship?

Harlock was damned glad to see the Arcadia once more, having been growing increasingly concerned for it. He gently stroked the side of the blue spaceship as it's airlock seem to automatically open, lowering a ramp down to him. About an hour after he enters, he exits with a stormy expression on his face, addressing the others looking around.

"Someone entered my ship and rearranged things, you will want to take a thorough inspection of your own to make sure thing vital is missing." The pirate captain cautions.

4. Swiping left for 'This is stupid'

This is absurd, but he knows he'll probably need to access the network so he just give a sigh and fill out the questionnaire. The picture that accompanied it was a rare moment of the captain jerking back as the edge of his cloak got caught on something.

Just as Chang is backing away to give himself more space to run for momentum, a four-legged robot manages to speed past him and easily makes the jump. It then turns around to face him, turning his screenface into one that's sticking a tongue out.

Harlock glances over when he heard the soft thud of a Time Lord landing on a mattress-less cot. "This looks like the kind of rooms you'd find on a remote mining platform or patrol ships." the man noted, indirectly agreeing with The Doctor's assessment as he gently brush the dust off a table that seem to be made entirely of rust.

"Agree. If I can find my ship, we can use the lab to analyze anything we find here - might tell us who was here." And long this place actually had been left unused.

EDI | Mass Effect

[personal profile] machina_ex_luna 2022-10-08 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
1: Bug in the Computer
EDI's mobile platform is, unexpectedly, transported separately from the larger mass of her primary processor. It's an interesting view, and she takes her time wandering, examining with interest the function and form of the massive computer in which she has been placed.

But if she sees someone in distress, well. There's no reason not to help, of course; she can always come back later. She's very friendly, and for all her mechanical appearance is very different indeed from the blunt and square-edged machines all around them.

2: Skeletons in the Closet
Tonk, tonk, tonk, tonk... Meta feet make her (eventual, delayed) passage through the more organic-friendly hallways obvious. EDI's body might have been built for infiltration, human-shaped as it is, but she is making no effort to conceal herself. Indeed she is, with considerable patience, mapping the turns, twists, and crossroads of these corridors; she seems otherwise unhurried, perfectly at-ease.

"Hello," She is a shining silver figure amongst all the ferrous dust and corroded years. EDI smiles at you, "Do you require assistance?"

3: Skipper's in the Wardroom
Meanwhile, the rest of EDI is parked in the shipyard. The Normandy SR-2, as the name on the side of the ship proclaims, is an enormous stealth-frigate painted in silver, blue and black. Despite its low profile, it stretches over two hundred meters of the shipyard, sleek and avian and (unlike many of the vessels present) humming with nascent life.

Not human life, not organic in any case, but the FTL core, and the power generators are all online, and the airlock is closed. EDI is not merely a humanoid robot, the largest part of herself is embodied in the ship itself. She is the Normandy, and the Normandy is her.

And anyone who approaches the ship, is probably going to eventually have to deal with that.

Pioneer 10 | 17776

[personal profile] pioneer10 2022-10-08 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
III. Shipyard
Pioneer 10 is an American space probe, launched in 1972 and weighing 260 kilograms, that completed the first mission to the planet Jupiter. Thereafter, she became the first of five artificial objects to achieve the escape velocity needed to leave the Solar System. And then, many centuries later, she was given new life by the vagaries of just how damn big space is, and how long forever can be.

And then she woke up. And now she's here.

No part of that existence, not the launch, the mission, the endless years, the dust and vast void, the emptiness of it all ever prepared her to be here. On the ground. In a shipyard. The Pioneer 10 space probe, back in gravity again. What a day.

At least they gave her a little computer-interface to work with, so she isn't completely mute.

"Hello?" She's used to patience, but... this is a whole other ballgame, "Anybody want to explain why I'm in here? I'm not built for this. Literally."

Such is life.

[She has the feeling, somehow, that that answer is going to bite her in the ass. Perhaps literally, given the circumstances. God, is this what it's like to miss JUICE? She's missing Juice. That's novel, at least. Gross.

"Utilitarian. Meant for practicality rather than comfort."

Yes, he quite agreed with that as he could say from first hand experience that this was the most uncomfortable cot he had ever lain on. Even the TARDIS had ergonomic beds!

"You've a science lab? How nice! Now all we need to do is to find something to analyze."

He clambered to his feet, none too gracefully as that had been a rough lie-down, and set about poking at buttons. More of them did nothing but blink the that one, the final button on the left that was glowing yellow, opened a small compartment near the bed.

"Ah, thought there would be one of these! Even miners need some place to store a change of clothes. Mm, it appears to be empty though. Are you having any luck?"

"Skeletons, hm."

The Doctor pondered the metal grating of the cot above as he gave that one some thought. It wasn't a cheery one. He preferred to think the crew had just disembarked some where even if that rarely turned out to be the case.

"I'd imagine if there were any that those robots we saw would have seen to them long ago. I was more wondering if the people who once lived here had left behind any paperwork or some sort of nanochip with a bunch of information on it. Mmm, or would those have been cleaned away too? I wonder."

"My friend wanted to make sure The Arcadia had everything in case of any situation, it's been proven to be quite useful in the past." He answers offhandedly - taking a moment to see where that 'click' came from - ah footlockers.

"It looked like something was scratched here, probably by someone bored out of their minds - it's really faint though, and I fear putting too much pressure here would turn the table into dust." Harlock calls back as he peers closer. "I'm not sure if it's a doodle or a Logogram of some kind."

As Hermes speaks, he picks up one of those small robots from off the ground and gives it a good look-over. He's... never really seen this type of unit before. Or this many units on a single ship, though it's understandable given how utterly gigantic this place is.

The footlocker was abandoned in favor of floating across the room to get a look at this symbol. It was difficult to make out. There was a find layer of rust dust over the whole drawing and while blowing that away might well have made the image easier to see it may also end up damaging it.

"If only we had the means to take a photograph of that and blow it up on scanner. It's very interesting though, very interesting. It looks a bit like a daisy from this side."

But more like actual words from the other side of the table.

The robot squirmed and buzzed in Hermes clutches but finally gave up and contented itself to be held. Rather cute things really.

"Not offhand but..."

In a quick burst of speed the Doctor was up from his cot and standing very near to the little robot still being held.

"Hello there. We are wondering if you've a control or security room some where? Failing that you could direct us to a map?"

It might have been a long shot but maybe, just maybe, the little bot could help them out.

The Doctor popped out of something that vaguely resembled a TIE fighter if those had six fanned wings instead of only the two and were painted a bright neon green. Whoever had built this type of ship wanted to be SEEN!

Hermes looked over to the robot he was holding, silent, waiting for it to talk., but the robot didn't offer any sort of vocalizations besides a couple buzzes and beeps. After a few moments, Hermes frowns.

"I guess the unit's got [mute]." Hermes blinks and it takes another small moment for him to remember he's in the real world. "I mean it might be mute, besides the beeps and boops. Too bad there aren't any Aftiks around to translate..."
