Hermes, in general, wasn't being particularly observant if one were to pay attention to him. Sure, he was looking around, but it seemed like a mere afterthought to him, based on body language. Once the Doctor points out the consoles, Hermes makes a bolt to them, stopping in front of them and examining them without touching them.
